Hugh Severs

City Council
Title: Council Member (Position 2)
Phone: 509-964-1182

Term: January 1, 2018 - December 31, 2021

Hugh Severs was born in Mississippi and raised around the country in a multi-generation, military family. That gave Hugh the opportunity to learn many things, but he placed tremendous value on the freedoms we’re allowed in our great country, and he developed enormous gratitude for the service men and women who made and continue to make those freedoms possible. The development of his values continued as he attended Central Valley High School. At CV, he learned the value of teamwork and leadership, as well the value of having people of differing backgrounds on a team as he took part in various athletics, leadership classes, business clubs, and the associated student body. After graduating, Hugh continued his education at Washington State University, graduating with a degree in Landscape Architecture. This is where he was first exposed to working with municipal governments – having the opportunity to work with many small towns in the Palouse as well as in central Idaho on economic development projects, studying how urban planning and the decisions made by local governments directly impacts local economies and the people who live in and around communities. Through these experiences, Hugh came quickly to value being an active and educated citizen.

Hugh’s professional career began in a small, landscape design and construction business. An outstanding learning opportunity, Hugh saw the hard work, dedication, intelligence, and risks that a small business owner must endure to achieve success. He began to place great value on one’s freedom to choose his or her own path in life. Thus, Hugh chose to start his own business in the financial industry in 2011. His practice has allowed Hugh to align his strong desire and value to help others as well as control how and where he focuses his time, energy, and efforts.

While his professional career was beginning, Hugh and his wife, Jolene, were starting their family. Among Hugh’s values, family is among the most sacred to him. Over the years Hugh and Jolene were blessed with two boys – Jackson and Liam. Because of the wonderful community, people, and economic opportunities, they moved from Spokane Valley to the River District in Liberty Lake in 2008. He feels grateful to the community for its support through Jolene’s battle with breast cancer, for the wonderful schools his children are able to attend, and for his family’s many wonderful friends and neighbors.

Hugh feels humbled and lucky for the opportunity to serve on the city council since 2014. Hugh believes he has provided value not only by bringing his own values and ideas to discussions, but also by his efforts to collaborate with community leaders and fellow council members. He feels his time on council has helped him further develop his values in effort to use those values to continuously improve his ability to serve the Liberty Lake community.
