Pedestrian Crossing Flag Program

The City of Liberty Lake is planning to implement a trial program to explore the use of hand held flags at pedestrian crossings in the month of May.

Orange or yellow flags will be placed at crosswalks in yellow holders to provide pedestrians with an additional means of capturing a driver's attention.

General Instructions:

Flag use is voluntary and not a requirement. If you feel that a flag will provide you with an additional means of gaining a driver's attention:

1. take a flag from the holder,
2. hold the flag out in front of you or above you as you cross the street,
3. once you have reached the other side of the street, place the flag into the nearest holder.

We plan on installing two ped flag crossing locations this spring.  Both of them are near City Hall so we can monitor usage and replace flags easily.  If the program gains popularity we will explore the possibility of expanding the program to other intersections.

This program mirrors a well established ped-flag program in the City of Kirkland, WA.  Kirkland implemented a similar program in early 2008.  Please call Andrew Staples, City Engineer if you have any questions or comments at 509-755-6730.
